Seleck Matthews House
| Located at 115 Main Street in South Yarmouth, this handsome Greek Revival house is typical of the style of homes being built throughout Yarmouth and Cape Cod in the 1830s and 1840s. Seleck Matthews, a prominent ship's captain, lived here throughout the 19th century. A member of the Boston Marine Society, Matthews worked for the Philadelphia and Savannah Steam Ship lines and was a veteran of the Civil War. As was also the case in Yarmouth Port, many of the local sea captains built lovely homes along the main street of South Yarmouth in the 1830s, 40s, and 50s -- the heydey of the maritime era. |
