Kettle Holes and Kettle Ponds
The HSOY trails are an excellent example of the glacial formations of kettle holes and kettle ponds. When the glacier melted, sometimes large chunks of ice were left behind in the silt deposits. When these thawed, the land collapsed forming what we call kettle holes. If the kettle hole was deep enough to go below the water table, it filled with water and became a fresh water pond, a kettle pond. Cape Cod has many of these lovely fresh water ponds. The Perera Trail loops around a kettle hole and the Pond Trail skirts Miller Pond, a kettle pond.
